This year’s OTKA research excellence calls are going to be announced in the first week of April 2019 by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office. In terms of their key parameters, the new calls correspond to the similar types of calls of the previous years. However, it is good news for researchers intending to submit fundamental research proposals that new terms will be introduced to allow a more flexible utilisation of funds and reduce administrative burdens.

This year again, the NRDI Office will announce three main OTKA types of calls to fund basic research proposals.

The OTKA thematic research programme will be open to experienced researchers and their research teams. This programme will include the so-called “K” type calls, which have many years of tradition, as well as the calls for proposals in Hungarian–Austrian (ANN) and Hungarian–Slovenian (SNN) cooperation.

Talented researchers in their early career will be able to apply for two different calls depending on the time since the acquisition of their PhD/DLA degrees. One will be open to applicants having obtained their degrees after 1 January 2014 (young researcher or “FK” type), while another one to those with PhD/DLA degrees dated after 1 January 2014 (postdoctoral or “PD” type).

In terms of their key parameters, all calls will be aligned with the similar types of calls of the previous years. At the same time, the several changes are foreseen by the NRDI Office to allow a more flexible utilisation of funds and reduce administrative burdens. For instance, a significant change in the postdoctoral excellence programme will enable the applicants to plan not only the postdoctor’s wages but also material expenses in the budget of their proposals.
