Delivering a welcome speech at the event, József Pálinkás, President of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office highlighted that, given its global impact, science has a pioneering role in bolstering social and economic relationships, including the opening towards the countries of Latin America.
It was also noted that the NRDI Office plans to publish a call for proposals aimed at supporting scientific and technology cooperation between Argentina and Hungary later in October.
The President of the NRDI Office also mentioned that he had recently received high-level leaders from Latin America in the Office to discuss the framework of future cooperation and priority areas offering win-win opportunities to both parties. As a result of these constructive talks, the Office will soon announce calls for proposals aimed at supporting bilateral scientific and technology cooperation with Ecuador and Mexico, in addition to the one with Argentina, and these programmes will encourage the launch of commercially promising joint projects in agriculture, biotechnology, medicine, water management and energy technologies.
József Pálinkás stressed the huge responsibility that science has in addressing the world's new global economic and social challenges, and said that united efforts and different forms of cross-border cooperation in the field of research, development and innovation are key to tackle these challenges. The President of the NRDI Office also said that Brazil’s participation in co-organizing the 2013 World Science Forum was an important step towards strengthening relationships between Hungary and Latin America. During his service as the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Mr. Pálinkás proposed that the global forum, which is organized biannually in Budapest, should be hosted by a country outside Europe every second time.
The Forum, which was held at the National University of Public Service, was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in cooperation with a number of government organizations, including the National Research, Development and Innovation Office.
